Ex Player and Manager dies at the age of 59

It is with deep sadness that the Gwynedd Football League has learnt of the death of Llanrwst United FC stalwart and Chairman, Phil Smith, who died suddenly at the weekend at the age of 59. Phil was a former player with the Roosters and went on to successfully manage the side during the 1990's and reached the old FAW Intermediate Cup final (now known as the FAW Trophy) in 1998 when they lost to Dinas Powys in Newtown as a Gwynedd League side. That same season saw the Club win the Barritt Cup beating Nantlle Vale 4-1 convincingly at Llaneilian Road, Colwyn Bay, finished Runners-Up to Amlwch Town in the League and losing to Penrhyndeudraeth in the Presidents Cup Final. Our thoughts and condolences are extended to Phil's immediate family and friends at this most difficult time and both their First Team and Reserve Team matches have been cancelled this coming Saturday as a mark of respect.

It is with also sadness that the League has learnt of the death of Gwyn Hughes who was a prominent figure and stalwart with the old Vale of Conwy Football League in its heyday. Gwyn was also a former Committee member of the Gwynedd Football League when it had two divisions not long ago following the demise of the VOC League
