Tigers double up their trophy cabinet to bag the Gwynedd Cup

By Alun Foulkes

after beating fellow islanders Bro Goronwy 2-1 at Bethesda.

In a low key final with very little chances created, Menai Bridge Tigers were the more determined outfit than Bro Goronwy and eventually bagged the Cwpan Gwynedd through Owain Roberts 67th minute winner.

The writing was so nearly on the wall in the opening 30 seconds, Kelvin Fraser slamming the upright with a venomous free kick.
Bro settled and created chances, Connor Jones over the target from off the right, brother Taylor Jones slotting wide from a Tom Wood set up then Wood himself steering over.
Menai applied the pressure from numerous Shaun Lock long hurling throws, the ball hooked off the line the closest.
Bro opened the scoring after 17 minutes, captain Dylan Jones battling well in the box to leave Jac Thomas just enough on his shot to squeeze past Dave Clarke into the net.
Menai fought back and were on top until the break, levelling and piling the pressure on.
Dean Redmond moving in from out wide but sending his ball into the nearby river.
Callum Graves drove at goal, forcing Sweetser-Hawkes to use his feet well to deny him, the ball dropping back off Bro’s crossbar and inches away from crossing the line from Dale Owens header from the resulting corner.
Redmond found joy on the half hour to level, finding space in the box to slot under Sweetser-Hawkes.
Bro held firm as the long throws rained down to go in all square.
On his day Jac Thomas could have put Bro back into the lead, reaching Aaron Healds free kick but flicking the ball the wrong side of the post.
Shaun Lock went close on the break, also spinning his volley the incorrect side to goal before the Bridge took the lead and what proved out to be the final winner.
Owain Roberts shot, not the cleanest of strikes, but enough to find its way past the stopper into the corner of the net.
Bro had to push, leaving space at the back but creating half chances to force extra time.
Andy Williams eyes lit up with a sight of goal but his shot was blocked as it looked all ends up to be a leveller before Lock so nearly tied the match up, Sweetser-Hawkes again denying the midfielder.
Jac Thomas had the final chance but summed up Bro’s day, working into a good position in on goal but delaying to allow Menai’s defence to smother him out and lift the Cwpan Gwynedd Meditel Cup to go with their recent championship victory.
