Waunfawr edge out Bro Goronwy

1-0 in a tight Gwynedd Cup final

Sponsored by Meditel at the Oval, Caernarfon Town FC tonight.

Waunfawr held aloft the Gwynedd Meditel Cup at Caernarfon Town FC after an early 1st half strike was enough to win the showpiece, all be it that the Beganifs had to overcome a better 2nd period display from the islanders, stopper and man of the final Gerallt Bracegirdle proving to be a one man barrier in front of his goal. Sloppy defending was to be ultimately crucial as Waunfawr struck after only 5 minutes of the final played.
Adam Jones' stinging shot could only be parried into Shaun Roberts path who duely smashed the ball into the back of the net for a dream start by the local outfit for 1-0.
Bro struggled to move out of any of their low gears in their display as chances in the 1st period were lacking, Adam Jones for Waun going closest, shooting just wide
Slowly Bro started applying pressure but still lacked quality in front of goal, Liam Willighan crossing for Andy Williams only to bang his effort over the bar.

Tea cups must have been flying around Goronwy's dressing room during the interval as a different performance followed in the 2nd half, Bro pegging Waunfawr back, winning all the loose balls, creating numerous decent chances in front of goal but ruefully not converting any to their own downfall.
Callum Thomas arrowed a free kick, also with a teasing slight deflection, under Bracegirdle's cross bar only for the gloves man to tip over before Taylor Jones' back flick set up Andy Williams only for the striker to send the ball just off target.
Thomas came closer still, Graham Jones playing him in on goal from wide but again the goal keeper won the duel, pushing away his goal bound fierce shot.
With Bro pushing and adding an extra forward in place of a defender Waunfawr so nearly doubled their lead, full back Dylan Hughes' marauding run ending with his shot bouncing back off the cross bar on 70 minutes.
Bro's supporters did all their best to suck the equaliser into the net but it didn't seem to be their night as guilt edged chances came and went up until the final whistle.
Sam Regan's free kick fell invitingly at the feet of Taylor Jones but staring at goal from 4 yards out he managed to loft the ball over the target.
Dylan Jones close range header was expertly tipped over the bar yet again by Bracegirdle and then on 78 minutes Goronwy were celebrating a leveller, only for the linesman to rule out Liam Willighan's finish for offside.
With nothing to lose Waunfawr broke on Bro once again, Sweeter-Hawkes this time excelling in front of goal.
Waunfawr's name could certainly be engraved on the cup as in the dying moments Bro's luck in front of goal didn't change.
This time Andy Williams connecting perfectly at the far post to be denied by a point blank save from his volley.
Waunfawr hung on to take the honours but Bro could possibly be looking for revenge in this seasons NWCFA Junior Cup Final as both these teams may meet again.

Full-Time 0-1.
